According to ABC7 Chicago, a man was found dead with burns throughout his body and injuries to his head behind a business in Portage Park on Tuesday morning, Chicago police said. Officers also found accelerant and lighter fluid near the man's body at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the discovery was made near the City Volkswagen auto dealership in the 5300-block of West Irving Park Road. Police have not released the man's identity or detailed how long his body may have been at the scene before it was found.
Accelerant Found Near the Body
Investigators recovered both accelerant and lighter fluid near where the man was discovered, the outlet's report notes, a detail that has drawn particular attention from detectives working the case.
Finding liquid at a scene does not, by itself, establish what the substance was or how it was used. The Illinois State Police says its forensic laboratories analyze fire debris for the presence of ignitable liquids that may have been used as accelerants. The public account of the Portage Park discovery does not say whether any recovered material has been tested or what investigators have concluded about the burns. Illinois State Police’s description of its forensic work explains the role of laboratory analysis.
Area Five detectives are now handling the investigation, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. No further information about a cause of death, a suspect, or a motive has been made public as of Tuesday morning.
Illinois has a state-level investigative resource for suspicious fires: the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Division of Arson Investigation provides fire-investigation and law-enforcement services to local agencies. The division says investigators can examine a fire’s origin and cause, collect evidence and conduct follow-up investigations; its guidance says local fire departments or law enforcement agencies can request assistance. Police have not said whether the state division is involved in this case. The state fire marshal’s description of the division outlines its role.
What Remains Unknown
Many basic questions about the case remain unanswered, including the man's identity, the timeline of events leading up to his death, and what role, if any, the accelerant and lighter fluid played. Chicago police have not indicated whether they are treating the death as suspicious or released any additional statements beyond the initial report.
Chicago has seen a separate fatal attack involving a person being set on fire: Joseph Kromelis, known as the “Walking Man,” died months after he was burned while sleeping in River North in 2022. Joseph Guardia later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 47 years in prison. That case resulted in a conviction; police have not announced a comparable finding, suspect or charge in the Portage Park investigation. The 2024 sentencing in Kromelis’ case provides a local point of comparison.
Portage Park residents and nearby business owners may see an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues. Hoodline will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
