A 29-year-old man is dead and two other people are recovering from gunshot wounds after two men got out of a car and opened fire on a North Lawndale sidewalk Friday evening. The shooting happened shortly after 5:15 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Ogden Avenue on Chicago's West Side, striking all three victims before the attackers fled.
Police said three people were standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle pulled up next to them, according to WGN-TV. Two suspects then got out of the vehicle and opened fire, striking all three victims, police said, before fleeing westbound. No one has been taken into custody, and Area Four detectives are investigating.
The victims were a 29-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman. The 29-year-old was shot in the chest and taken to Stronger Hospital, where he later died, per the same report. The 23-year-old man was shot in the stomach and remains in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital, while the 35-year-old woman was shot in the left leg and was listed in good condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
A Neighborhood With a Painful Pattern
Friday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence that has touched North Lawndale in recent months. In July, a man was killed and a woman was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the neighborhood, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The following month, a 35-year-old man was shot and killed overnight in North Lawndale, according to CBS Chicago.
Just blocks from Friday's scene, a similar ambush unfolded last fall. Andre Hudson, 61, and a 21-year-old man were standing outside a corner store at 3459 W. Ogden Ave. around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 when a dark-colored car pulled up and a back-seat passenger opened fire, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Police recovered at least 14 rifle casings at that scene, and the car fled east with no arrests made. Hudson later died from complications of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Investigation Remains Open
No description of the suspects, their vehicle, or a motive for Friday's shooting has been released. Area Four detectives continue to investigate, and it remains unclear whether the attack is connected to any of the other recent shootings reported in North Lawndale this year.
