Proper Burger is serving its final meals on Salt Lake City's Main Street this Saturday, Nov. 7, closing the restaurant at 865 S. Main St. for good. Next door, the Proper Brewing taproom isn't done just yet — it's expected to stay open through the rest of November before it, too, shuts its doors.

The closures were announced via an Instagram post, according to The Salt Lake Tribune, which reported that Proper Burger's final day will be Saturday while Proper Brewing's taproom next door will remain open through the month. Until then, customers can still get Proper Burger's food at the taproom while it's open, the paper noted. Ownership didn't explain the reason for the closures in the post, and the Tribune said attempts to reach them on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Where To Find Proper After Main Street Closes

Once both Main Street businesses wind down, diners won't be totally out of luck. The same report states that Proper food and beer will still be available at Avenues Proper, Sugar House Station and Proper Brewing's Moab location, and that Proper beer will still be available statewide even after the taproom and restaurant are gone.

At Sugar House Station, the pairing of beer and burgers is already a signature offering — the venue's own description notes that Sugar House Station pours a rotating lineup of house-brewed beers alongside a menu of signature burgers, fries and salads from Proper Burger. That overlap means loyal fans of the Main Street combo won't have to choose between the two once it's gone.

A Beer Born From SLC Punk Culture

Proper Brewing's Main Street taproom has long been tied to local identity through its beer lineup, including its SLC Pils, a beer inspired by the 1998 film “SLC Punk!,” according to the same Tribune account. The brewery has leaned into that connection before, and the taproom's pending closure adds a layer of nostalgia for longtime regulars tied to that cult favorite.

A Property Listing, Separately Reported

Earlier reporting from Building Salt Lake noted that the Main Street property, a .47-acre parcel hosting two buildings providing 16,400 square feet, had been listed for sale at $6,590,000. That same report said the company was said to be needing 20,000 square feet for its expanding craft beverage operation. Whether that listing has anything to do with this week's closure announcement isn't established by the available reporting.

Not Proper's First Closure This Year

This isn't the first time a Proper-branded business has shut down in 2026. Gastronomic Salt Lake City reported in June that Craft by Proper's Sugar House location named Saturday, June 20, as its final day of service, while Avenues Proper, Proper Burger, Proper Pub and the brewery continued operating at the time. Other Salt Lake City breweries have faced similar struggles this year — Kiitos Brewing's flagship location closed after service on Aug. 29, following a Chapter 11 filing in April to reorganize its debts, though its Sugar House bar was said to remain open indefinitely, per the Tribune's earlier coverage.

For now, Proper Burger's Main Street chapter ends Saturday, and the taproom next door has a few more weeks left on the clock. Fans looking for their usual order will need to make the trip to Avenues Proper, Sugar House Station or Moab once the lights go out on Main Street for good.
