A University of Illinois Chicago building was evacuated and shut down Wednesday afternoon after police began investigating an attempted stabbing involving two students on campus. One student was taken into custody, and officials said no one was injured or stabbed.
According to WGN-TV, police activity was first reported around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 750 South Halsted Street, on the second floor of Student Center East. Telemundo Chicago, however, placed the start of the police response closer to 12:40 p.m. at the same second-floor location, and the discrepancy between the two reported times has not been resolved.
University of Illinois Chicago police said the incident involved two students, and that one of them was taken into custody, the station's report noted. Officials said no one was injured or stabbed, and police told reporters the area had since been secured with no threat to the campus community.
Building Closed as a Precaution
Student Center East was evacuated as a precaution once police responded, and the building remained closed while the investigation continued, per the same account. The closure affected students and staff who use the building, which sits along the busy Halsted Street corridor near the heart of campus.
CBS News Chicago reported that police were called to a second-floor walkway between rooms 605 and 606 inside the building, offering a more precise location for where the confrontation unfolded.
Chicago Police Assisted at the Scene
Chicago police confirmed they were on scene supporting the university's own police department, according to Telemundo Chicago. Beyond the presence of additional officers, further details about the alleged weapon, what led up to the confrontation, or the investigation's outcome have not been released.
It also remains unclear what charges, if any, the student taken into custody could face. UIC police have not identified either student involved in the incident as the investigation continues.
