A welfare check on Indianapolis's west side turned into a homicide investigation Saturday morning after officers found a man dead inside a home on Lupine Drive. A 37-year-old man was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder, and police say they believe the killing was targeted rather than random.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers were sent to the 3200 block of Lupine Drive at about 10:06 a.m. on Saturday to check on a resident's welfare, according to WISH-TV. Inside, they found a man with injuries consistent with trauma, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The home sits on the west side of Indianapolis, southwest of North High School Road and West 34th Street, according to WTHR.

Suspect Taken Into Custody Nearby

The 37-year-old suspect was located in the 3200 block of West Washington Street and taken into custody on the preliminary murder charge, per WTHR's report. The station has a policy of not naming suspects until the prosecutor's office files formal charges, so his identity has not been made public.

Police said they believe the incident was targeted and that there is no threat to the community, according to WISH-TV. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency assisted investigators with identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence at the scene, per the earlier account.

Victim's Identity Withheld Pending Notification

The man who was killed has not been publicly identified. The Marion County Coroner's Office is working to determine the exact cause and manner of death and said it will release his identity only after notifying his next of kin, according to the same report.

IMPD homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the killing. The department is asking anyone with information to contact Detective Carl Clark, an IMPD homicide detective, at 317-327-3475 or by email at [email protected], per WTHR. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
