Now that the Dodgers/Giants series is behind us, we're putting our rivalry on hold just long enough to find out what one Angeleno has to say about Hayes Valley.

In a Los Angeles magazine article published yesterday, writer Elina Shatkin "roam[s] two neighborhoods that offer a smart—and tasty—alternative to the tourist haunts" -- Hayes Valley, and NoPa. It starts out a little rocky -- "Hayes Valley is just north of downtown" -- but goes on to make some solid recommendations for eating, shopping, and getting a dose of culture in the neighborhood. The author calls out about 15 Hayes Valley standouts, from Absinthe to Suppenküche to the new SFJAZZ center. She even highlights some less-publicized local gems like Moishe's Pippic and True Sake. All in all, she says Hayes Valley "feels a bit like today's Brooklyn when you walk among its smart boutiques and low buildings," and declares it "a pedestrian-friendly antidote to L.A.'s sprawl." Hard to argue with that!
