A KFC/Taco Bell at the corner of Third Street and Jerrold Ave shut its doors for good just before the July 4th holiday, but we've learned that this property has been acquired by a development firm called Workshop1, which owns several other sites in the neighborhood.

The former fast-foodery was whitewashed shortly after it closed.

According to tipster Robert W., the franchise closed without notice, followed by “a swift all white painting over of the building and removal of its signs.”

There was no advance notice, he said, just "a sign left inviting patrons to visit other locations.”

Developers are currently considering replacing the former fast-food eatery with a six-story residential building that contains 100 units.

Current plans call for at least 41% of the development to be two-to three-bedroom units, with a portion would be set aside as below-market-rate.

According to a Workshop1 representative who preferred not to give his name, this plan is not set in stone. "We are still in the first stages of this project and some of this may change,” he said.

"Through our outreach, we are learning more from the community about what works best for this area,” he added. “We received a lot of comments about how KFC/Taco Bell had a smell that permeated through the neighborhood and was blighted surrounded by trash and debris.”

By contrast, Workshop1 says its “goal as a firm is to create a modern living space for Bayview residents with quality retail."

The bottom half of the building is designated for mixed-use commercial retail and industrial space. At least 93 off-street parking spaces will also be available for residents and shoppers.

Workshop1 is still attending community meetings to present its concept and get community feedback; as of this writing, no plans have been submitted to the city for review or approval.
