A violent altercation outside a Cave Creek Walmart has put a 19-year-old in chains while leaving the community shaken. According to ABC15, the young man fired shots at Walmart loss prevention employees to "scare" them after a dispute escalated in the store's parking lot this past Sunday. The incident reportedly started inside the store near Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway around 5 p.m., when the suspect and another individual engaged in what was believed to be shoplifting.
Police documents revealed that, after being confronted by the store's employees, the two men agreed to pay for the items before departing the store. However, the situation quickly deteriorated when one of the men embroiled himself in an argument with the employees outside, subsequently drawing a handgun and discharging it toward the store entrance. Despite the petrifying ordeal, no injuries were reported in the wake of the gunfire that shattered the store's doors and marred the walls and trim.
As the suspect barricaded himself in his home, a rapid response by law enforcement culminated in several hours of negotiation before he surrendered. A subsequent search of the residence unveiled an array of firearms, as confirmed by the authorities. Shedding light on his motives, the suspect conveyed to police that he was "being harassed by the store’s loss prevention… and decided to confront them," as obtained by ABC15 from police documentation. He admitted to his attempt to intimidate the loss prevention personnel by shooting toward the store's front entrance.
Initially, just moments after the shooting, the male suspect was at large, with deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office canvassing the area for the gunman who had mysteriously vanished before their arrival, FOX10 Phoenix reports. The harrowing incident unfolded near 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 28, a detailed timeline that framed the initial search efforts. Despite the earlier uncertainty and attempts at apprehension, the suspect's identity was later confirmed and his arrest effected, marking a close to the active search that ensued.
The suspect now faces a slew of charges including aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and criminal damage. While this matter moves forward through the legal system.
