The legal landscape in Florida has undergone a significant shift as the Florida Supreme Court has cracked down on professional misconduct, disciplining a total of 21 attorneys stemming from a range of allegations including misappropriation of funds, contempt charges, and lack of professional integrity, with some attorneys facing the harsher fate of license revocation. According to Local 10 News, four lawyers from Miami-Dade County and two from Broward County are among the disciplined, with serious accusations leading to their suspensions.
In a notable case from Miami-Dade, William “Bill” McCaughan Jr. was arrested in July over charges involving child pornography on the Kik app, pleading not guilty, his legal journey has taken a turn with the Supreme Court granting his petition for disciplinary revocation which allows him to seek readmission after a five-year hiatus, a significant career setback that he, along with his colleagues in the legal profession, are grappling with outcomes that set the tone for the standard of practice in the state. Similarly, attorneys Hector Acosta Jr. and James Leano faced suspension over alleged misappropriation of their client's funds, which is a severe breach of trust that the justice system strives to protect against.
Paul Silverberg from Broward County found himself on the wrong side of professional conduct, accused of inadequate escrow fund management and unsanctioned communication with a former client while suspended, which raises questions about adherence to legal ethics. Likewise, Miami-Dade's Pedro Gonzalez received his suspension post-contempt charges for failing to attend to Bar inquiries and a court order, behavior which stands in direct defiance of legal procedural norms; Jose Pete Font of Broward endured a three-year suspension after creating motions with unprofessional commentary towards his peers. This series of disciplinary actions, as released by the Florida Bar on X emphasizes a notable tightening of regulatory oversight.

While the aforementioned six attorneys have faced disciplinary scrutiny, they are but a portion of the wider sweep that saw the professional fate of an additional 15 attorneys dissected, with sanctions ranging from license revocation to reprimands, reflecting the rigorous measures taken by the judiciary to uphold ethical practice standards. Other attorneys across the state, including from Orlando, Daytona Beach, and Tampa, were also disciplined for various infringements, as per information available on the Local 10 News report; their careers, now marred by the disciplinary shadows, serve as a stark reminder of the thin line that legal professionals walk between service and the potential for professional downfall.
