In a digital leap for the state, Illinois might soon see its drivers trading in their old-school plastic licenses for high-tech digital ones – on their smartphones, that is. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is pushing for a bill that would enable residents to carry digital driver's licenses and state IDs, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, and state Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, are sponsoring the said legislation.
Should the bill pass the General Assembly, Illinoisans can start storing their digital licenses on their phones as early as next year. Giannoulias expressed his confidence in the secure and advanced system, asserting, "Smartphones have become convenient places to store everything from movie tickets, boarding passes, and credit cards," according to FOX 32 Chicago. While physical cards won't be cast aside, these digital alternatives would act as a backup accessible on one's phone.
The proposed digital IDs tout greater privacy as one of their perks, giving holders the power to choose which personal details to share through encrypted data exchange. Imagine, you could confirm you're of age to buy a drink, without flashing your home address - a boon considering today's privacy concerns. Buckner, seeing technology as a cornerstone for societal improvement, told FOX 32 Chicago, "I’m confident this legislation will ensure that the implementation of digital IDs is done in the right way to protect the privacy of all Illinoisans."
Giannoulias also suggested that the digital IDs could help slash wait times at driver's license facilities, since the digital platform permits remote updates to licenses and IDs – no more in-person visits necessary, as per the Chicago Sun-Times. This shift to digital is not unique to Illinois, with 12 states already in the digital license game, and another 18 gearing up to join them. Yet, the true test will be in ensuring that these digital assets do effectively streamline the bureaucracy without compromising the personal security Illinoisans hold dear.
