Chaos erupted midair on Delta Airlines flight #57 last week as an Arizona man, Darnel Silver Collins, spiraled into a sequence of unruly behaviors that escalated to him spitting on passengers during the journey from Amsterdam to Salt Lake City. As ABC15 reported, Collins, a 19-year-old minor league baseball player for the Kansas City Royals and a dual citizen of the Netherlands and the United States, began his disruptive actions just one hour into the flight.

The situation rapidly intensified, causing the flight crew to have to constantly monitor the passenger for roughly nine hours. According to details from a Erie News Now article, Collins initially "loud and disruptive," tapping other passengers and not respecting their personal space. This behavior soon included following and inappropriately touching a female passenger who had to push him away after flight attendants were called to assist.

Court documents further reveal that Collins, unable to be calmed, was then involved in another altercation where he grabbed a woman's arm as she exited the restroom, refusing to let go until bystanders and crew members intervened. Attempting to contain the disruption, flight attendants had to move eight passengers to new seats. However, Collins, undeterred, continued to interact and "speak with other passengers," before being moved again after his actions were feared to possibly escalate to physical violence.

Once relocated to the back of the plane, Collins continued to cause further disturbances, going so far to "intentionally spit" on passengers. This caused the flight crew, as ABC15 detailed, to restrain him using flexicuffs. Despite these restraints, he succeeded to still stand up and unbuckle his seatbelt, leading to his being wrapped with multiple seatbelt extenders to keep him seated for the flight's remaining hours.

Upon landing at Salt Lake City International Airport, police took Collins into custody on charges of both assault and "Interference with a Flight Crew." Reflecting the seriousness of the offense, especially considering the necessity for passengers and crew to feel safe within the confines of an aircraft, Collins is now facing federal charges and is being held in jail in Utah. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to flight protocols—both for one’s safety and the safety of others.
