Florida Atlantic University is gearing up to initiate a fresh hunt for its next president after the prior effort was thwarted due to irregularities, as reported by the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The university's Board of Trustees, which will convene this Tuesday, is on track to appoint a new search firm that will support in identifying suitable candidates and will also delineate the duties that the search committee is expected to handle.
Interim President Stacy Volnick has been at FAU's helm since 2022, stepping in after John Kelly's retirement, yet the mission for a long-term successor came to a standstill last summer, a stoppage mandated by Chancellor Ray Rodrigues of the state university system who highlighted "anomalies" in the process according to NBC Miami; in December Rodrigues directed the institution to reboot the entire process from square one.
In a document made public on FAU's website, the university proudly announced a historic milestone, graduating 3,600 students in May and revealed a significant uptick in interest with 47,000 applicants for the upcoming fall term, marking a 27 percent jump from the year before. "To build on that trajectory, the next president of Florida Atlantic University must have the vision, temperament, and experience to seize the opportunities and overcome the challenges that Florida Atlantic will encounter as it strives to lead and educate the next generation of thinkers and innovators," the document stated, as per NBC Miami.
The search committee, which is yet to be established, is expected to offer a list of unranked candidates to the Board of Trustees by January, followed by an anticipated appointment of a new president in early 2025 this process will be finalized with the approval of both the Board of Trustees and the university's Board of Governors, as per the articles by both CBS12 and NBC Miami.
