In what marks a significant period for the pursuit of justice in Indiana, Attorney General Todd Rokita's office has managed to firmly uphold law and order. Clocking in a 96% success rate, the Attorney General's team is reflecting its resolve to ensure criminals face the consequences of their actions. According to a statement released on the official Indiana Government events website, the office has emerged victorious in the majority of both civil and criminal appeals decided in the first half of 2024.
"Every day, we work hard to protect Hoosiers from wrongdoers and pursue justice for victims," Rokita stated. This commitment has translated into maintaining the incarceration of individuals convicted for heinous crimes such as child abuse, murder, and rape. In total, the first six months saw the closing of 956 appeals, with 863 of these going through complete briefings and resulting in opinions from appellate courts.
The diligence of the appeals team, headed by Chief Counsel of Appeals Angela Sanchez, was specifically lauded by Rokita, who emphasized the group's dedication to the safety of Hoosier families. Their efforts to get through more than a thousand cases annually reflect not just on the individual victories or statistics, but spell out a broader narrative of community safeguarding and retributive justice.
Highlighting the impact of their success, Rokita referenced two recent cases wherein the appeals team managed to successfully argue in favor of a 55-year prison sentence for a murder-for-hire convict and upholding a murder conviction against a domestic abuser. These successes, however, are not solely numbers to be added to a tally. They are, as suggested by the Attorney General, critical measures in keeping dangerous criminal elements at a safe distance from society and reinforcing the rule of law in Indiana.
With the 831 victories out of 863 appeals, comprising 253 civil cases and 610 criminal cases, the office of Attorney General Todd Rokita closes the first half of the year on a clear note of success, and in doing so, carries the weight of assuring Hoosier families of a rigorous legal apparatus geared to uphold justice.
