The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba (WMEC 907) has successfully completed a major drug interdiction operation, leading to the offloading of approximately $50 million worth of cocaine and marijuana at Port Everglades. According to a Coast Guard press release, the crew brought in more than 3,400 pounds of cocaine and 4,410 pounds of marijuana, interdicted in international waters off South America in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
Working closely with interagency and international partners, the Escanaba's crew was able to robustly enforce the law and uphold security in a region fraught with the perils of illicit drug trafficking. "The Coast Guard's presence in the Eastern Pacific is vital to our mission of disrupting the flow of illicit narcotics and safeguarding our nation's security," Vice Adm. Nathan Moore stated in the press release. He further emphasized the importance of such operations by adding, "The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba, through their unwavering professionalism and dedication, has once again demonstrated the critical role our people play in these complex operations."
The interdiction efforts were a collaborative endeavor involving various units and agencies. The Coast Guard press release lists several engaged assets, including the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) from Jacksonville, the Law Enforcement Detachment 107 from the Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team – Pacific (PAC TACLET), and the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-South).
Further reporting by WSVN echoes the achievements of the U.S. Coast Guard. Their report underscores the importance of such operations, reiterating Vice Adm. Nathan Moore's assessment of the Coast Guard's role in the region. Seven suspected smugglers, the Coast Guard press release notes, were also transferred to federal custody to likely face prosecution by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba, based in Portsmouth, Virginia, is well-known for its 270-foot Famous-class medium endurance cutter which plays a key role in such operations. These efforts contribute to the tasks enforced by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces’ (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiatives aimed at disrupting high-level criminal organizations that threaten U.S. interests.
