A Colorado dentist faces federal charges for allegedly trying to solicit a minor online and transporting child pornography, according to an indictment yesterday in the Southern District of Florida. Jason James Atha, a 50-year-old from Broomfield, Colo., used a social networking app to communicate with someone he believed to be the mother of an 8-year-old child, starting on Oct. 3, 2023. In reality, he was speaking, to an undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent.
The disturbing conversations detailed the sexual acts Atha intended to perform with the child. On August 9, Atha traveled to Palm Beach International Airport to meet the child but was arrested upon arrival. Following his arrest, a search of Atha's devices uncovered child pornography videos. Despite these grave allegations, Atha has not been convicted, and an arraignment hearing is scheduled for Aug. 26, "U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Anthony Salisbury of HSI Miami made the announcement," as found on the Department of Justice website.
If found guilty of the charges, Atha could face a maximum sentence of life in prison for attempted enticement of a minor, and 20 years for transportation of child pornography. His initial appearance in court was on August 12 in West Palm Beach, Fla. The case is under investigation by HSI West Palm Beach and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Schiller.
Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse is part of the effort that led to Atha's indictment. The program unites regional and national agencies to better locate and prosecute individuals who commit these crimes as well as to identify and rescue victims. For those seeking more information or to report exploitation, there is a hotline available at (877) 4-HSI-TIP [(877) 447-4847].
