An investigation remains ongoing following a tragic event in Northwest Miami-Dade where a man and woman died in what appears to be a murder-suicide yesterday morning. According to CBS News Miami, police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on W. Randall Dr. around 8:30 am, where they discovered two adults with gunshot wounds who were later pronounced dead at the scene.
Miami-Dade detectives indicated that the individuals were formerly in a domestic relationship and had three children together, ages 9, 13, and 15, who were present during the incident. It was the eldest child who made the 911 call, reporting the shooting. After the incident, walking through the neighborhood surprised by what had happened, neighbor Donna Williams told CBS News Miami that it is an unusual event for the area, saying, "this never happens around here."
NBC Miami reported that the individuals, a 40-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, were separated a few months prior to the shooting and that the man had come to the woman's house, where a dispute escalated to violence.
The children, who after witnessing the horrific event, the youngest was taken to the hospital out of precaution. While emphasizing the investigation that is being conducted to understand the circumstances leading up to the tragedy, Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin said, "So our prayers are with this family and these children," in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
It was noted by police that there had been no previous recorded incidents of domestic violence between the couple, complicating the understanding of the motive. Detective Martin also urged people in potentially violent domestic relationships to seek help and emphasized the availability of resources like domestic violence injunctions, according to the interview with CBS News Miami. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
