Earlier today, tragedy struck Southern Boulevard near Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach County when a 63-year-old man was killed following a collision involving his scooter and an SUV. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported that the accident occurred shortly before 3:15 a.m., and the man on the scooter, identified as Louis Capazzoli of Loxahatchee, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WFLX.
Investigators indicated that the SUV, a 2020 Chevy Equinox, was rear-ending the motor scooter as both vehicles traveled eastbound, this crash caused severe disruptions in traffic flow with authorities alternately closing and opening lanes to manage the traffic movement. The driver of the Equinox, reportedly a 26-year-old Clewiston man, sustained minor injuries and was transported to HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, as documented in a crash report obtained by CBS12.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office further noted that there are indications suggesting the Equinox driver might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, heightening the gravity of the situation and ongoing investigations into the exact circumstances of the crash.
Following hours of traffic delays, as the authorities conducted their investigations and managed the aftermath of the collision with traffic snaking back for miles and drivers experiencing significant delays, the Sheriff's Office confirmed that all lanes were reopened just before 9:30 a.m. This was after eastbound lanes had been temporarily shut while westbound lanes remained functional, causing morning commuters extensive delays and a disrupted routine as they navigated the start of their workweek.
