The City of Deerfield Beach has landed a multimillion-dollar grant that will propel forward the development of a new marine science museum, part of the upcoming Sawgrass to Seagrass Center at Sullivan Park. According to the City of Deerfield Beach announcement, the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) bestowed $3.3 million on the initiative. This funding is a significant contribution toward the center's total projected cost of $8.1 million and will be specifically allocated for the construction of the marine science museum.
With these funds, the city aims to quickly begin construction on the Sawgrass to Seagrass Center, with expectations to complete the building work in late 2025 and to open the museum in spring 2026. The focus will not only be educational but recreational, providing visitors with interactive exhibits designed to increase awareness of the local marine life and ecosystems. FIND, which oversees the maintenance of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, granted the support as part of its effort to promote and protect the waterways in Florida.
Of the 70 project applications this year, FIND selected 54 for funding, with Deerfield Beach’s project receiving the largest grant issued to a city in this round. FIND's involvement with the city is not new, as it also funded the marina at Sullivan Park back in 2017. Deerfield Beach Mayor Bill Ganz expressed his enthusiasm over the grant, calling it "a game changer for Deerfield Beach," in the previously mentioned announcement by the City of Deerfield Beach. He emphasized that the FIND grant funds will "make local dollars go further and have an even bigger impact in the community and throughout the region."
Community response has been one of gratitude and anticipation, as voiced by the Deerfield Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). In recognizing the positive implications of such a substantial financial injection, the development of the Sawgrass to Seagrass Center is set to become a reality, serving both the local community and eco-tourists. The marine science museum aims to be the jewel in the facility's crown, promising to educate and inspire about the unique and delicate balance from sawgrass to seagrass in the aquatic surroundings of Sullivan Park.
