A jury in Oakland has delivered a guilty verdict against 62-year-old Tracy Robert Blackwell for a hate crime-related road rage incident on I-880, per an announcement by District Attorney Pamela Price. According to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, Blackwell was found guilty of felony assault with a deadly weapon with a hate crime enhancement and now faces up to 7 years in prison.
The troubling sequence of events unfolded on May 16, 2023, when a mother with her children in tow was confronted by Blackwell, who cut off her vehicle and nearly caused a collision near the southbound I-880 freeway onramp. Following the close call, Blackwell hurled racial slurs, including the N-word, towards the family and tossed items at their car. The mother's 14-year-old daughter documented the volatile encounter, capturing Blackwell's aggressive maneuvers and verbal abuse on video.
"I first want to thank the jury for their diligent work in delivering this guilty verdict and holding Mr. Blackwell accountable for a hate crime," DA Pamela Price stated, as per the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She also commended Deputy DA Laura Anderson for her role in prosecuting the case.
Additionally, on social media, a viral video spotlighted the intensity of the incident, leading to Blackwell's identification and subsequent arrest. KTVU's Henry K. Lee reported that Blackwell, also a registered sex offender, attempted to ram the victim's vehicle and, in the process, crashed his Jeep against a freeway wall.
