An Amite man is in custody after admitting to the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend. According to a statement released by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Demarcus Womack, 22, faced charges including second-degree murder, feticide, and obstruction of justice.
Deputies responded to a distress call from a residence on Bankston Road in Amite, just before 7 a.m. yesterday, and upon arrival, they found Aieron Thomas, 19, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest, reported by FOX8 Live; Thomas, who deputies confirmed was 13 weeks pregnant, was pronounced dead at the scene and Womack, her live-in boyfriend quickly emerged as the primary suspect in the case, he admitted to the shooting as well as trying to hide evidence of the crime, which included the firearm used to commit the act, said the sheriff's office.
The swift arrest was the result of diligent work by the TPSO Criminal Investigations team, whose efforts were commended by Sheriff Gerald Sticker; in a statement obtained by FOX8 Live, "TPSO Sheriff Gerald Sticker praised the Criminal Investigations team for their swift work on the case, expressing hope that their efforts bring a measure of closure to Thomas' family as they begin to heal from the tragedy."
Details surrounding the motive for the shooting remain unclear, while the TPSO has not released further information at this time, as per WWLTV.
