An early morning episode in Oceanside turned fatal when a 26-year-old Hispanic man, later identified as Emmanuel Avilez-Acosta, succumbed to what was ultimately determined to be self-inflicted injuries despite efforts by first responders to save his life. According to the City of San Diego's official website, the Oceanside Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to an apartment on the 1400 block of Division Street on Tuesday after reports of a man excessively bleeding from wounds to his chest and neck.

The situation deteriorated when he inadvertently caused himself more injury. The man began to struggle with medics on the way to the hospital. It necessitated the application of soft restraints with the help of an Oceanside police officer, as reported by Hoodline. The efforts of hospital staff upon their arrival proved futile, and Avilez-Acosta was pronounced dead.

Given the use of force to subdue Avilez-Acosta during transport, an in-custody death investigation was triggered as a precaution. The San Diego Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation in conjunction with the Medical Examiner’s Office, which has since classified the death as a suicide, not influenced by the efforts to restrain him. This decision came after examining the circumstances of the struggle during his transit to the hospital.

Officials have made it clear that the actions of the Oceanside police officer, who had joined the department about a year ago, are being reviewed. After its application was deemed necessary to restrain the victim during the emergency response, the use of force was scrutinized by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and also subjected to an administrative investigation by the Oceanside Police Department. Oversight is being maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office, the City of San Diego says.

Authorities are appealing to the community for any relevant information concerning the incidents leading to Emmanuel Avilez-Acosta's death.
