An Aurora man has been convicted of criminal sexual assault, with a jury determining on October 24th that he sexually exploited someone he knew after providing them with cocaine, rendering them unable to consent. According to a report by the Daily Herald, Ricardo Lemos, age 42, is now facing a four-to-15-year prison sentence.
The assault occurred in July 2022 and Lemos, residing at the 1700 block of Felten Road, has been incarcerated at the Kane County jail since, his case underscored by the Kane County State Attorney’s Office's stance on the severity of the offense, and Lemos being ineligible for probation, this due to the calculated manner in which the assault was perpetrated. Lemos is scheduled for a court appearance on December 20th at the Kane County Judicial Center for post-trial motions.
Details from the courtroom, obtained by WGN-TV, revealed that prosecutors argued Lemos used drugs as a means to incapacitate the victim before the assault. Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Rodgers highlighted the predatory nature of the crime, stating, "The defendant exploited his relationship with this victim to sexually assault her," and praising the victim's courage in reporting the incident.
Lemos' conviction not only brings justice, seemingly to the victim, but it also serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities individuals can face within their own circles of trust, and the critical role law enforcement and prosecutors play in confronting such chilling breaches of morality. The commendations by Rodgers to the victim, ASA Bridget Carlson, victim advocate Sheila Gray, and Detective Benjamin Grabowski of the Aurora Police Department, underscore a collaborative effort to ensure that survivors of sexual assault are heard and supported through the often intimidating journey of the legal system.
