The Chicago Police Department has issued a business alert after a series of commercial burglaries struck the Back of the Yards and Bridgeport neighborhoods within the 9th (Deering) District. According to a business alert posted on the Chicago Police Department's official website, the recent crimes involve breaking and entering by smashing front glass windows or doors using a sledgehammer.
In both reported incidents, one taking place on the 5000 block of S. Halsted Street at 4:29 A.M. and the other on the 2600 block of S. Halsted Street at 6:02 A.M. on October 29, 2024, the suspects, described as 2-3 males, one wearing a black ski mask, black hooded sweatshirt, and black pants, and another in a black sweatshirt and black pants were seen driving a White Kia Sportage, Illinois License Plate DK76313. The offenders gained entry and removed cash registers and money from the businesses before fleeing the scene. Looking for suspects, the police are urging business owners to maintain vigilance.
In response to the break-ins, authorities are advising proprietors to enhance security measures. Owners should "keep the perimeter of your property well lit," and "report suspicious activity immediately" to help deter and report criminal activity. They are also reminded to "keep doors and windows secured" and to "immediately repair any broken windows, doors, or locks," which can make establishments less of a target for prospective thieves.
Additionally, the Chicago Police stress the importance of preserving evidence post-incident. Businesses are being asked to, "If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives." Likewise, if a crime occurs, "do not touch anything, call police immediately." In situations when witnesses are present, business owners are encouraged to "request contact information" to support police in their investigation. In efforts to fortify their premises, business owners are further recommended to "secure window air conditioner units" which can be unexpected entry points.
