The loss of a young student has led to a legal battle against Brandeis University, with the family accusing the institution and its police officers of negligence in the wake of the student's death. Eli T. Stuart, a 20-year-old sophomore at Brandeis University, died last December after ingesting a lethal combination of prescription and over-the-counter medication. According to a statement by the family's attorney, Howard M. Cooper, and as reported by CBS News Boston, Stuart's death was a needless tragedy where a professor's report and a mother's worried calls were not acted upon promptly.
Details provided in the legal complaint, as explained by Boston 25 News, allege a failure by Brandeis University's police officers to take immediate action, despite a professor's dire warning and subsequent alarm from Stuart's mother. The complaint states that clear warnings indicated that Eli was in distress. The lawsuit also claims that an audio recording from Stuart's phone captured them changing their mind about ending their life, yet help did not come until it was too late. Cooper has asserted that officers on the scene were slow to respond and their actions, or lack thereof, amounted to a "serious dereliction of duty."
In their lawsuit, Stuart's family seeks justice and change, hoping not only to find closure but to implement measures to prevent such occurrences from happening to others. "We want to make sure that no other family has to endure the pain we have suffered and will continue to suffer forever at the expense of an institution and individuals who were responsible for the safety and well-being of our child," the family said in a statement to Boston 25 News. They seek to honor Eli's legacy as an "advocate for others" through this lawsuit.
Responding to the allegations, a Brandeis University spokesperson stated, "Eli Stuart was a beloved member of the Brandeis community and their loss was felt deeply on campus. We offer our deepest sympathies to their family," as reported by CBS News Boston. The university emphasized its commitment to student safety and the availability of "multi-disciplinary safety resources" to all community members. However, the unfolding lawsuit presents a stark contrast between this reassurance and the actions taken on the day of Stuart’s death.
