A man, reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, was hospitalized after being shot in an encounter with Fort Lauderdale police officers this afternoon, as confirmed in statements by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

The incident occurred in the Melrose Manors neighborhood, where police responded to a call for help shortly before 12:45 p.m., arriving at the scene at 305 SW 25th Ave, officers were met with a man armed with a gun and immediately, the situation escalated prompting an officer to discharge their firearm, injuring the armed individual, as further detailed in a report by WSVN. The area was quickly sealed off with crime scene tape around a blue house, and nearby streets were blocked to stop the usual flow of traffic, as seen in a WSVN 7Skyforce aerial shot.

"The male had a gun and was in the home with other people," Detective Ali Adamson, spokeswoman for the police department, wrote in the narrative of events that unfolded, according to Local10. Following the shooting, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials promptly transported the wounded man to Broward Health Medical Center's trauma center, his condition remaining undisclosed at the time of reporting, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is set to take over the investigation.

Detectives have reached out to the public, urging anyone with information about this incident or other cases to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
