Two deputies from Maricopa County Sheriff's Office found themselves on the receiving end of formal reprimands following an incident earlier this year, wherein they offered an "unauthorized" escort to the family of a suspect in a high-profile murder case, an event that garnered immediate scrutiny and criticism for the perceived breech in protocol and the hint of preferential treatment it suggested, as per 12News.
On March 7, during a juvenile court proceeding for suspect Talan Renner, who is facing charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping for his alleged involvement in the brutal killing of Preston Lord at a Halloween party, the deputies were witnessed facilitating the passage of Renner's parents through secure areas, culminating in the extraordinary step of one deputy driving a private vehicle, a white Tesla, to a more secluded spot for the family, thus allowing them a swift and discreet egress from the courthouse a gesture not afforded to the families of typical defendants, a situation Sergeant Calbert Gillett of Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed with little elaboration to 12News.
This gesture did not sit well with Maricopa County's presiding judge Joseph C. Welty, whose stance was made clear in a statement that underscored the breach in standard operating procedure, saying, "The deputy was not acting at the direction of the Superior Court or the Court Security Office," and moreover, that "The action was inconsistent with court security protocol and gave the appearance of preferential treatment," indicating a clear divergence from the impartiality expected in the halls of justice, according to a statement obtained by 12News.
The deputies were reassigned shortly after the incident, but it wasn't until months later, through media reports like those from ABC15, that it became known they had faced internal investigations and received written reprimands. The next court date for the Renner's trial weighs imminent, slated for January as media coverage continues to orbit around teen violence in the Maricopa County area.
