In a somber tribute to the lives lost in the past year, the Salt Lake Valley Coalition to End Homelessness has announced the forthcoming annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Vigil set for December 19. The event will honor the individuals who have died while facing homelessness in Salt Lake County, in the time frame from December 19, 2023, to December 19, 2024, as reported by the coalition's news release.
The vigil will commence at 5:30 pm and conclude at 6:30 pm at the northeast corner of Pioneer Park, located at 300 S 300 W in Salt Lake City, it aims to offer a space for community reflection and remembrance, with an emphasis on respect and solemnity that befits the gravity of the losses endured. In addition to reading the names of the deceased, there will be a moment of silence, and further enrichment through speeches and music, to both remember and celebrate those no longer with us, the event does not only signify mourning but also reflection on the societal affliction of homelessness that continues to claim lives.
As reported by Salt Lake County, community members, regardless of their connection to those lost, are encouraged to take part in the memorial. It’s described not just as an event but as a memorial service that demands the same respect and decorum as any service of this nature.
