The sounds of gunfire disrupted the Central 9th neighborhood late Friday night, initiating an investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD). According to SLCPD, calls about gunshots and a fight came in around 11:26 p.m., near 625 South Washington Street. Responding officers found neither active combatants nor victims upon their arrival.
While the sequence of events remains to be fully discerned, witnesses painted a picture of an argument escalating rapidly into gunfire. As obtained by SLCPD, Police Chief Mike Brown lamented the violence, stating, "this shooting appears to have been a reckless act of violence." In the aftermath, involved parties quickly dispersed, slipping away in vehicles before law enforcement could secure the scene.
Not long after the incident, SLCPD's Gang Unit, which was responding to the reported shooting, spotted a car matching the description given by witnesses. A traffic stop followed in the Ballpark neighborhood, resulting in the discovery and seizure of a stolen firearm. Two unnamed men were taken into custody by detectives under various charges relating to weapon possession and controlled substances.
