Castro residents and visitors in search of Shanghai-style dumplings will soon have another option to satisfy their appetite.

Dumpling Table will soon open at 4039 18th Street, formerly Mr. Hen Noodle House.

Hoodline readers will recall Mr. Hen closed last year after less than two years in the Castro.

Public records indicate an application for a construction permit was submitted in December and was issued last week.

On a recent visit by a Hoodline reporter, a job card was posted in the window and construction was ongoing inside.

Remodel work includes adding a new cashier counter, enlarging the service opening, installing new flooring, adding new kitchen equipment, and making the front door ADA accessible.

Construction costs are estimated to be $17,500.

Dumpling Table will join a handful of restaurants in the neighborhood that serve dumplings including Dumpling Kitchen (544 Castro), Dumpling House (335 Noe), and Shanghai Dumpling King (720 14th).

The space at 4039 18th has seen a great deal of turnover in the twelve years since Vietnamese restaurant Zadin closed in 2013. Since then, it's housed five closed restaurants: Urban Picnic, Mekong Kitchen, Indo Restaurant, Rooster & Rice, and Mr. Hen. Asian fusion restaurant Malacca briefly operated out of the space from 2005 to 2007.

Longtime Castro residents will recall that 4039 18th was the longtime home of burger joint Hot 'N' Hunky which operated from approximately August 1981 until June 2005. (Let us know the exact dates, if you know them, in the comments below).
