An off-duty corrections deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office was fatally shot in Belle Glade, an incident authorities are calling targeted. The shooting occurred at 7:32 p.m. in the 1400 block of Northwest Avenue D. When deputies arrived, they found the deputy with gunshot wounds. According to NBC Miami, he was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The deputy’s name has not been released pending family notification.
A ceremonial escort took place from St. Mary's Hospital to the Medical Examiner’s Office to honor the 39-year-old deputy, who had served with the sheriff’s office for three years, as per the CBS 12 report. The escort route was from Greenwood Drive, 45th Street to I-95.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released details about the motive or the identity of the shooter. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-8477 (TIPS).
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office told NBC Miami, "Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. We are distraught to say the least." The procession served as a respectful tribute to a fallen colleague, as PBSO and other agencies continue their investigation into the targeted shooting.
