An elderly man has died following a collision in Box Elder County last Friday morning, according to a report from the Utah Department of Public Safety. The crash occurred at approximately 5:35 am when a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by 82-year-old Martin Jenson of Amalga, UT, failed to stop at a sign at the intersection of 2400 W and SR-218.
The Hyundai was travelling north when it was hit on the driver's side by an eastbound 2024 Nissan Rogue. Jenson was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he eventually succumbed to his injuries. His wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was also taken to the hospital but with injuries deemed not life-threatening. The driver of the Nissan was unharmed during the accident. As a result of the incident, officials closed SR-218 for approximately three hours to investigate and clear the scene, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.
While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, early indications suggest that the failure to observe the stop sign was a primary factor in the tragic event. The reported fatality in Box Elder adds to the troubling statistics of road fatalities involving senior citizens, a concern that has been raised by traffic safety advocates in recent times, who point to the unique challenges faced by older drivers.
