Jefferson Parish, in collaboration with recycling partner Glass Half Full, has called off the recycling drop-off scheduled for Saturday, March 29, 2025, due to inclement weather conditions. Announced through the Jefferson Parish official website, the collection at the sites, one situated at 700 David Drive in Metairie and the other at 6440 Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero, is set to recommence a week later on next Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As residents await the return of recycling opportunities, Glass Half Full has provided a roster of accepted materials for the upcoming event, including glass bottles and jars—excluding any broken glass or ceramics—alongside cardboard, mixed paper, and select metals and plastics. Specifically, the company is gearing up to accept aluminum, tin, steel cans, plastics numbered #1, like soda and water bottles, and plastics #2, which are typically found in milk, juice, shampoo, and detergent containers. While the recycling drop-off is on a temporary hold, driven by the whims of weather, the commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility remains steadfast.
In anticipation of successful recycling practices, the following guidelines have been shared with the community: only items listed should be recycled and those in doubt should contact the Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs or consult with on-site representatives from Glass Half Full. Ensuring cleanliness of recyclables is also paramount; metals and plastic food containers should be rinsed with greasy pizza boxes and similar contaminated items destined for regular trash. Notably, recyclables should never be bagged, as plastic garbage bags can interfere with the machinery used in sorting. Most grocery stores, as a reminder, will gladly take back various filmy plastics such as packaging and single-use bags for their own recycling programs.
On the day of the drop-off events, proof of residence such as a driver's license or utility bill will be required from those looking to recycle. This stipulation ensures that only residents of unincorporated Jefferson Parish, the Town of Jean Lafitte, and municipalities within Jefferson Parish who are serviced by curbside trash collection can access the sites.
