Mayor Kerry Thomson of Bloomington released a statement addressing concerns about recent federal immigration policies. According to the City of Bloomington, the statement acknowledged that some residents have questions and concerns related to the situation.
The mayor stated, “Our changes in the federal immigration landscape have created tremendous uncertainty for many of our residents, which reverberates through homes, schools, and hearts.” Thomson said the city aims to provide a safe environment but does not have the authority to carry out federal immigration enforcement, noting the division between local and federal roles, as reported by the City of Bloomington.
Mayor Thomson directed residents to contact local organizations and legal service providers that specialize in immigration law. “We continue to strongly encourage residents to reach out to those groups directly for questions, guidance, and support,” she said. She added that while the city has limited authority in immigration matters, it remains committed to helping the community. “Though our authority is limited in this space, our commitment to supporting our community within the bounds of the law remains constant,” Thomson said, as stated by the City of Bloomington.
