A domestic violence call turned fatal in Salt Lake City when police shot and killed a 42-year-old man inside a residence. Officers responded to the incident shortly before 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving a report of what was described as a "life-threatening domestic violence call," according to KUTV. KUTV's reporting indicated that the officers were called to the scene to address an urgent situation.
The situation escalated quickly upon police arrival. ABC4 recounted that a woman had barricaded herself with her two children in a bedroom. She told officers her ex-husband, who had previously threatened her life, was present in the home, and she could smell gasoline. When law enforcement entered to intervene, at least two officers discharged their weapons, fatally striking the suspect. Efforts to save the man's life were made, but he died at the scene. His identity has not been publicly disclosed, as reported by ABC4.
Following the shooting, an officer-involved critical incident protocol was triggered, a standard procedure aimed to ensure transparency and thoroughness in the investigation. The Unified Police Department is to conduct the investigation. Meanwhile, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, which aligns with standard department policy after such incidents.
Commendation was also given to the emergency call responder who handled the initial report. "We also want to recognize the emergency call taker in this case who did a remarkable job under a lot of pressure," said a Salt Lake City public safety official in a statement. "Their professionalism and calmness during this critical incident exemplify the outstanding teamwork we share with our partners at SLC911," as obtained by KSL.
