Janice Turner, the mother of "Beautiful Girls" singer Sean Kingston, was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison after being convicted in a wire fraud case. Turner, aged 63, and her son were found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud, involving over $1 million in luxury goods obtained through false wire transfers, according to NBC Miami. Kingston, legally known as Kisean Anderson, is yet to be sentenced, with his hearing scheduled for Aug. 28.
During her sentencing, Turner expressed remorse and said, "I'm sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry. They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son," as reported by CBS News Miami. The scheme, which lasted from October 2023 to March 2024, targeted vendors of high-end vehicles, jewelry, and other luxury items. Turner and Kingston were accused of retaining the goods despite never completing financial obligations, in one instance involving a $285,000 watch and luxury SUVs.
Turner's attorney stated that most of the defrauded businesses had been made whole, per the same CBS News Miami report. Following her prison term, Turner faces three years of supervised release and the possibility of deportation to Jamaica. Turner requested, back in court filings, that her sentence should be only 30 months in prison as opposed to the recommended 63 to 78 months and she sought to be placed in a Miami-based prison to remain near her family, according to her attorneys in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
The conviction comes after a less than four-hour jury deliberation, indicating a swift and decisive conclusion to the trial. Kingston himself, not present in court since being placed on house arrest, wrote a letter to the judge pleading for a lighter sentence for his mother, whom he described, "She’s been a great mom, a loving, caring person," as Humberto Dominguez, Turner's attorney, informed NBC Miami. Turner, who had previously served time for bank fraud in 2006, and her son were arrested in May of 2024, with the arrest warrants outlining significant losses to the defrauded businesses.
The rise of Sean Kingston to fame came in 2007, with Kingston collaborating with artists including Justin Bieber. However, his and Turner's past is not without blemish, as Kingston was on probation for trafficking stolen property at the time of the most recent arrest, and Turner's prior conviction was for bank fraud. Their recent convictions draw a stark contrast to Kingston's public persona, once admired for infectious pop rhythms and tales of youthful heartbreak, Hoodline reported.
