A nearly three-decade-long mystery surrounding the disappearance of a fisherman in central Utah has reached a somber resolution. The Sevier County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a foot bone, discovered at Fish Lake and ensconced within a shoe, belonged to David White, who vanished back in 1997 at the age of 44. White's misfortune began on a solo fishing trip gone awry, his empty boat found adrift, a lone shoe and hat floating ominously in the water nearby, as reported by FOX 13.
Discovery of the skeletal remains occurred on May 16 when an individual's dog, engaged in an innocuous lakeside jaunt, retrieved the shoe that concealed the critical evidence of White's fate. In a turn of events bridging past and present tragedy, DNA comparison rendered a near-certain parental match between White and his daughter, affirming the lineage and identity, as KSL outlined.
The investigative process tapped into the expertise of the medical examiner's office and Bode Cellmark Forensics, who directed the DNA collection and subsequent testing. With a 99.9994% certainty of a parental match, officials pieced together the final chapter of White's narrative, an affirmation awaited by family and the original search and rescue team for nearly 28 years. This evidence brought some semblance of closure to a community long haunted by the fisherman's abrupt and mysterious vanishing act.
Sheriff Nathan Curtis shared a sentiment reflecting the collective relief, stating, "This case has been on the mind of every one of the SAR members who were involved in the search 28 years ago. It is good to finally have some closure for the family and the searchers," as obtained by My Central Oregon. Stefanie Bennett, the daughter of David White, expressed profound gratitude for the diligence of the authorities involved and the accidental hero, who, along with their dog, stumbled upon the critical piece of her father's legacy. "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sevier County Sheriff's Office, SAR's, Detective Sgt Pearson, Detective Sgt Larsen, Sheriff Curtis, and Gary (Moulton) from Fishlake Lodge for their incredible support and tireless efforts. We are also deeply grateful to the individual and his dog who found the shoe – without them, we would not be where we are today," she told My Central Oregon.
