Early Thursday morning, a chaotic scene unfolded on North Michigan Avenue where a significant traffic accident occurred, resulting in at least six injuries. The crash reportedly happened at 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ohio Street and Michigan Avenue, a location that is home to high-end boutiques and a hub of citywide activity. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, this incident followed a smash-and-grab burglary at the Louis Vuitton store, 919 N. Michigan Ave.
The repercussion of the incident led to road closures that ensnared morning traffic. All lanes of Michigan Avenue were blocked between Ontario and Illinois, as reported by NBC 5's traffic reporter Kye Martin, "This is a huge scene, " Martin said around 5:45 a.m. "You're going to want to avoid Michigan Avenue for the next hour or so for sure." The NBC Chicago coverage detailed that detectives were at the scene, investigating the backdrop of heavily damaged vehicles.
The fallout from the smash-and-grab and the subsequent crash drew a significant response from emergency services. Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, confirmed that six individuals were transported to Northwestern Memorial and Stroger Hospitals, all in serious to critical condition. Police presence was notable not just at the scene of the crash, but also around two miles south, as they investigated a vehicle near Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue.
