A Houma man has recently pled guilty to the serious charge of possession with intent to distribute a substantial quantity of fentanyl, as outlined by Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson. The individual, identified as Desmond Johnson, age 44, admitted his involvement in a drug trafficking operation during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Johnson could face a severe sentence including up to 40 years in prison and a fine potentially as high as $5,000,000.
Details from the court documents allege that Johnson was suspected to have been actively dealing drugs, specifically heroin and fentanyl, out of an apartment located in Houma. A subsequent search warrant execution at this address led to the discovery of not only fentanyl but also drug paraphernalia consistent with distribution activities. Johnson later confirmed to law enforcement his intent to distribute the narcotics post his Miranda rights being advised, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office release.
The gravity of the offense is underpinned by the fact that fentanyl, a powerful opioid, is at the center of a relentless public health crisis that has claimed countless lives across the nation. In the wake of this plea, Johnson now waits for sentencing set for December 9, 2025. Beyond the prospect of prison time and fines, Johnson is also facing at least four years of supervised release and is mandated to pay a special assessment fee of $100, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The cooperative efforts between multiple law enforcement agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office, and the Louisiana State Police were highlighted by Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson. The case is currently being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stuart Theriot of the Narcotics Unit, who is likely to emphasize the significant role Johnson played in what appears to have been a deeply entrenched drug trafficking operation, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
