An undocumented Mexican national was sentenced to 60 months in prison after being convicted of drug trafficking and violating U.S. immigration laws, according to a release from the District of Utah's U.S. Attorney's Office. Kevin Enrique Sanchez-Carrillo, 25, of Draper, Utah, faced a judge for crimes that included the possession and intent to distribute large quantities of narcotics and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The sentence came after a series of events that commenced in March 2025 when a confidential informant bought methamphetamine from Sanchez-Carrillo. Federal law enforcement subsequently obtained and executed search warrants on his apartment and vehicle on April 3, which led to the seizure of various drugs and a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun, plus $7,750 in cash. According to court documents, Sanchez-Carrillo admitted to his criminal activities and is set to be deported following his prison term.
Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah was quoted in the official announcement saying, "Pumping poison in the form of illegal narcotics into our communities will not be taken lightly," as obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice. Viti's statement highlights the federal government's position on drug and immigration crimes under Operation Take Back America, which is aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration and the operations of drug cartels.
The drive to curb illegal drug trade and enhance community safety was echoed by Acting Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls of the Salt Lake City FBI and Lester R. Hayes, Jr., from Las Vegas. Both underscored the unwavering pursuit to hold such individuals accountable. "Individuals like Sanchez-Carrillo seek to profit while our communities are left to bear the cost of addiction, violence, and death," Bohls pointed out. Hayes added, "The sentencing of Sanchez-Carrillo sends a clear message to anyone involved in bringing drugs into our community: you will be caught, prosecuted, and held accountable," per the U.S. Department of Justice.
