A serious traffic incident occurred on U.S. Highway 89 in Layton, leading to significant road closures and several injuries. According to ABC4, a vehicle went out of control on the southbound lanes near 1200 North, at milepost 402. The car then struck a barrier and rolled onto the southbound on-ramp before colliding with another vehicle.

The Utah Department of Transportation informed that all lanes around the scene of the crash were initially blocked, disrupting the flow of traffic severely. Though lanes have since reopened, the entry ramp and right shoulder remained blocked for some time. As reported by KSLTV, traffic was diverted to Gordon Avenue following the incident.

Sergeant Mike Alexander from the Utah Highway Patrol explained that the rollover resulted in serious injuries for the male driver and critical injuries for the female passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle. The ejected woman was subsequently life-flighted to a hospital, as per KSL. The individual in the second vehicle involved in the crash reportedly did not sustain injuries.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with impairment and speed being considered as possible factors. Sergeant Blaine Prescott from the Highway Patrol remarked on the importance of adhering to speed limits for safety. "There’s a reason why the speed limits are posted for what they are. It keeps you safe, and also, obviously in this incident, other people on the road safe as well," Prescott stated, as per ABC4, highlighting the crucial extra seconds that legal speeds afford drivers to react in emergencies. Residents were quick to respond, with some assisting at the scene before first responders could arrive, according to ABC4.
