Residents in Jefferson Parish, get ready to adjust your schedules and take note of government office closures as the New Year’s holiday approaches. According to an announcement from Jefferson Parish, local government offices will be shutting their doors on Thursday, January 1, and Friday, January 2, 2026, in observance of New Year’s Day.
For those planning to rid their homes of post-holiday trash, there will be no curbside garbage collection on January 1 for residents of unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte. There is no makeup day scheduled for the missed garbage pickup; services will resume at the next collection day, which falls on Monday, January 5. Parish landfill and drop-off sites also will be closed on New Year's Day, set to return to routine operations the following day.
Reflect on your contributions to sustainability this season by recycling your festive remnants. The Glass Half Full initiative is providing recycling services on Saturday, January 3, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., weather permitting. Jefferson Parish residents can visit the recycling drop-off locations at 700 David Drive in Metairie and 6440 Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero for this service. The Parish is also encouraging residents to think beyond the trash bin with their live, unflocked Christmas trees. Parents should note that all Head Start Centers (managed by Jefferson Community Action Programs) will be closed from January 1 through January 5, welcoming students back on Tuesday, January 6. Outdoor enthusiasts, please take note: except for Lafreniere Park and Parc des Familles, all Jefferson Parks and Recreation (JPRD) facilities will be closed on Thursday, January 1 and Friday, January 2, expected to resume normal activities on Saturday, January 3. The JPRD Pickleball Complex shutters its doors along with others and reopens for play on January 3 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Lastly, don't miss the chance to enjoy the holiday lights one last time as December 30 marks the last day for Christmas in the Park.
