Provo police arrested 17 individuals implicated in an illegal cockfighting ring after an early Sunday raid revealed evidence of the gruesome events. As KSL reported, the investigation began innocuously as a welfare check, which spiraled into something far more sinister as previous suspicions about the known address were confirmed.
Utilizing drone technology, a bird's eye view provided by the officers uncovered suspicious activity—"Drone footage also showed several vehicles in the parking area and showed people loading cages in and out of vehicles," highlighted the team, an affidavit mentioned. In the operation, more than 56 dead roosters were found, contrasting with the cacophony of over 100 caged and crowing live ones, destined to meet a similar fate. According to a KUTV.com report, troubling implements such as razor claws, performance-enhancing drugs, and a room full of trophies celebrating these grim 'achievements' were uncovered on the premises.
Caught fleeing from the shed were 17, revealed by Provo police, including one juvenile among those apprehended in a nearby park or during a traffic stop in an ensnaring act that spanned multiple locations within the state. This led to a multitude of charges directed at individuals from disparate corners of Utah. Janna-Lee Holland, a Provo police spokeswoman, told KSL, that the suspects were booked "for investigation of potential charges such as aggravated cruelty to an animal, game fowl fighting, drug possession and fleeing from police."
The incident strikes a chord at the intersection of animal cruelty and illicit betting, a niche yet enduring vice in America's underbelly. Seven of those arrested are facing additional charges of aggravated cruelty to an animal. In the vehicle stopped by the police, which had fled the property, "razor claws for the roosters, more aggression-inducing drugs, and two roosters in a box" were found, as the police narrated in a harrowing breakdown of the equipment devised to ensure violence and pain in feathered combatants. This narrative came via a statement obtained by KUTV.com, providing a stark look into the cruel mechanics of the operation.
The investigation, as reported by ABC4, remains active with ongoing inquiries. The depth of this cockfighting ring's atrocities remains to be fully unearthed, as authorities comb through the carnage left in men's quest for ownership over the lives and deaths of beasts.
