The New Orleans City Council's Governmental Affairs Committee has approved Steve Nelson as the new Director of the Department of Public Works. Nelson, previously Deputy CAO for Infrastructure, will lead the department amid ongoing city infrastructure projects.
According to the Mayor's Office release, Nelson oversees the "Lights On" initiative to repair broken streetlights and chairs the Infrastructure Coordination Council, which coordinates scheduling between DPW and utility companies. He also supports increasing in-house construction capacity to manage city repairs.
Previously, Nelson led a team of over 400 employees at the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans across divisions including Engineering, Roads, Networks, and Water Purification. As Director of Public Works, he will focus on maintaining and improving the city’s infrastructure.
