An 18-year-old man was shot and killed yesterday after a fight in the parking lot of the Walmart in Eastlake, Chula Vista, authorities said. Officers tried life-saving measures on the victim at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have arrested a 32-year-old Chula Vista man in connection with the shooting and booked him into the county jail.
What happened at the scene
Chula Vista officers were called out to the Walmart in the 1300 block of Eastlake Parkway just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, following multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting. When they arrived, officers found the 18-year-old with a single gunshot wound. First responders attempted to save his life, and he was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he died, according to KGTV.
Arrest and investigation
Police say the suspected shooter, 32-year-old Thomas Perez of Chula Vista, called 911 after the incident and waited nearby for officers, who took him into custody. The initial investigation indicates Perez and the victim were involved in what police described as a mutual fight, during which Perez drew a holstered firearm and shot the teen. Investigators have not said what started the altercation. Perez was booked on a murder charge and is being held without bail, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
