A late Saturday night longboard ride in Millcreek ended in tragedy when a rider was struck and killed by a vehicle, according to authorities. The collision happened near 971 E. 3900 South at about 11:57 p.m., and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the person's identity as they work to notify next of kin.
Investigators told KUTV the longboarder was traveling westbound in the roadway when they were hit by a vehicle that was also headed westbound. The Multi-Jurisdiction Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team, known locally as the CAR Team, was called in to sort through the details of what led up to the crash.
Investigation Under Way
Police have not released the victim's age, gender, or identity and said next of kin are being notified, as reported by KJZZ. The Unified Police Department has said the cause of the collision is still under investigation and did not share additional details on Sunday evening.
3900 South Safety Work Planned
The section of 3900 South where the crash occurred is already flagged for safety upgrades as part of the UDOT-backed 3900 South Trail project, which would add a shared-use trail and other improvements. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026, according to UDOT. Millcreek's Transportation Master Plan has also labeled several points along 3900 South as crash "hot spots," highlighting long-standing safety concerns on the corridor, per Millcreek's Transportation Master Plan.
The CAR Team is continuing its detailed examination of the scene, and the Unified Police Department has asked for patience as investigators work to determine exactly what happened, according to KUTV. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
