A man died early Thursday after the car he was driving slammed into a utility pole just north of downtown Indianapolis, according to police.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 500 block of West 16th Street at about 4:15 a.m. on the city’s near northwest side. The driver was taken from the scene to a hospital, where he later died, and emergency crews remained on-site working around the heavily damaged vehicle and pole.
According to WIBC 93.1 FM, images shared with reporters showed the car up against the utility pole as crews moved to clear debris and secure the area.

This fatal crash adds to a troubling stretch for the 16th Street corridor. An April crash at North Shadeland and East 16th left an SUV passenger dead and required hours of on-scene investigation, with officers calling for witnesses to come forward. What Investigators Say
Police have not released the driver’s identity or said what might have caused Thursday’s crash, according to WIBC 93.1 FM. IMPD continues to investigate and is expected to share more details after contacting the man’s family and finishing their initial work at the scene.
