New Orleans is waking up Friday under clear skies, but the relatively manageable start will give way to dangerous heat by afternoon. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s, with humidity pushing the feels-like temperature well above 100 degrees.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Friday Evening
Friday’s high is forecast near 95 degrees, while heat index values could reach 109. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will stay light at around 5 mph or less, offering little help during the hottest part of the day. The low Friday night will only fall to about 79 degrees, and the overnight heat index could still reach 106, leaving limited time for homes and bodies to cool down.
Weekend Heat Builds With Little Relief
Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny, with highs near 96 degrees both days. Saturday’s heat index could reach 110, while overnight lows hover around 80; the latest NWS forecast discussion says heat warnings are likely across the region this weekend and into next week.
Monday looks much the same, with another sunny 96-degree afternoon and a low near 80. The hottest stretch will likely arrive during the afternoon, so outdoor work, exercise and errands are safer earlier in the morning or later in the evening.
Rain Chances Stay Slim
New Orleans has almost no rain chance through Monday, with only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arriving Tuesday afternoon. Rain chances rise to 29% Wednesday, but any storms would be scattered and are not expected to break the broader heat pattern.
Heat Safety Remains The Main Concern
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Residents should limit strenuous activity during the afternoon, check on relatives and neighbors, and take symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke seriously.
