The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to help identify an individual connected to a robbery that occurred in the area of Old US 33 and Ash Road. Investigators have assigned the case number 26003518 and are directing anyone with information to Detective Kwau Luntu.
According to a bulletin posted by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, deputies are trying to determine whether members of the public recognize the person pictured in connection with the robbery. The sheriff's office has not released additional details about how the robbery unfolded, and it remains unclear whether a weapon was used or whether anyone was injured during the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Luntu directly at 574-891-2359.
Where the Robbery Happened
The reported location, near Old US 33 and Ash Road, sits close to the border connecting western Elkhart County and eastern St. Joseph County, an area made up of a mix of commercial businesses, light industrial facilities, and residential properties, according to a property listing on LoopNet. Old US 33 functions as a primary roadway corridor linking Elkhart and Osceola. The route also carries some historical weight: it once formed part of the original Lincoln Highway alignment, established in 1913 as America's first paved transcontinental highway connecting New York City to San Francisco, according to Visit Elkhart County.
Under Indiana Code § 35-42-5-1, robbery is defined as knowingly or intentionally taking property from another person by force, threat of force, or fear. Standard robbery is generally charged as a Level 5 felony carrying one to six years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines, even if no weapon is displayed or used, per WomensLaw.org. The charge escalates to a Level 3 felony carrying three to 16 years in prison if the robbery is committed while armed with a deadly weapon or results in bodily injury to someone other than the defendant, according to the Law Office of B.D. Williams. Indiana law broadly defines deadly weapons to include firearms, knives, or any object capable of causing serious harm. It is not yet known which classification applies in case 26003518.
Leadership at the Sheriff's Office
The investigation falls under Sheriff Jeff Siegel, who has led the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office since 2019 after winning election in November 2018. Siegel joined the department as a deputy in 1991 and has spent more than two decades there, including a stint as captain of the Detective Bureau. A leadership change is on the horizon: Captain Mike Culp won the Republican primary in May 2026 to succeed Siegel, and with no Democratic candidate filed for the November ballot, Culp is on track to become the next sheriff, according to WSBT-TV.
The sheriff's office operates out of its headquarters and county jail facility at 26861 County Road 26 in Elkhart, with primary administrative lines at 574-891-2100, according to the Indiana State Police. That same stretch of County Road 26 was the site of recent law enforcement activity earlier this month, when Elkhart County Sheriff's deputies assisted Elkhart Police in seizing a suspect vehicle following a fatal Elkhart hit-and-run probe.
A County Facing a Range of Property and Violent Crime
Elkhart County had an estimated population of 208,774 as of 2025, making it the sixth-most populous county in Indiana and accounting for roughly 3% of the state's total population, according to STATS Indiana. Beyond the current robbery investigation, the sheriff's office and area police departments have handled a string of other cases in recent months, including vehicle thefts at Old Farm Apartments and a fatal shooting on Quiet Links Drive.
Residents who don't want to speak with detectives directly have another option. The sheriff's office works with Michiana Crime Stoppers, a non-profit that offers cash rewards funded by community donations for anonymous tips that help solve regional felony crimes. For this case specifically, investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the individual sought in connection with the Old US 33 robbery to reach out to Detective Luntu.
