A female dog found in a crate at a gas station was brought to a Jefferson Parish shelter in distress, where staff discovered a deceased puppy and moved quickly to surgery. The emergency C-section likely saved the dog's life, according to the shelter.
A passerby reported finding the dog before she was dropped off at Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services in Harvey last Friday. In the shelter's Facebook post Monday, JPAWS said veterinarian Dr. Brooke Kaufmann examined the dog and determined that an emergency C-section was needed.
Emergency Surgery At The Harvey Shelter
The agency's account says the operation likely saved the dog's life, while the veterinary record tied to the case documents an abdomen-lateral examination on the day of intake. Photos shared by the shelter show the dog receiving care as staff worked through a time-sensitive medical emergency.
JPAWS says it accepts stray animals found in Jefferson Parish and provides care and treatment as part of its animal-welfare mission. The parish lists the Harvey facility as its West Bank location and describes the agency's work in its animal-services information.
One More Emergency For An Already Busy Network
The surgery comes as Jefferson Parish's animal-welfare network is still absorbing a separate seizure of 54 dogs from a suspected breeding operation. In an earlier Hoodline report, the influx was described as straining kennel space and prompting local rescues to seek foster homes.
