A man was shot near the Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans on Thursday evening and later died at the hospital, according to NOPD. The shooting happened around 5:15 pm, and police say they do not yet have additional information about the incident, including a potential suspect.
The victim was taken to the hospital after the shooting but did not survive, per police, as first reported by WDSU. No further details about the man’s identity, the exact location along the corridor, or a motive have been released as the investigation continues.
A Corridor Built for Recreation, Now the Scene of a Homicide
The Lafitte Greenway is a 2.6-mile linear park and multi-use trail that opened in 2015, running from Louis Armstrong Park near the French Quarter through Tremé and Mid-City, according to the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission. Converted from a historic canal and railway line, the greenway serves more than 300,000 cyclists and pedestrians annually. The corridor falls primarily under the jurisdiction of NOPD’s First District, which covers Tremé and Mid-City, per district boundary records maintained by the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
The area has seen violence before. In February 2022, an armed robbery suspect fired at NOPD officers near the greenway before an officer discharged 17 rounds, according to body-worn camera footage released by police and reported by WWL-TV. A separate Metropolitan Crime Commission summary noted that a woman was carjacked at gunpoint in June 2022 on the 2100 block of Lafitte Street, adjacent to the greenway, after an assailant approached her from behind as she walked to her parked car.
Surveillance Tools Could Aid the Investigation
The City of New Orleans installed 71 public safety cameras and 18 blue-light emergency call boxes along the greenway corridor in 2025, directly linked to NOPD dispatchers and the Real-Time Crime Center, according to the Lafitte Greenway Partnership. The call boxes feature embedded cameras and microphones that connect straight to emergency dispatchers, tools that could prove useful as investigators work to determine what led to Thursday’s shooting.
Community support for that kind of surveillance appears strong. A February 2026 survey by the New Orleans Crime Coalition found that 79% of residents support expanding NOPD’s use of camera technology to solve crimes, while 87% reported feeling safe in their own neighborhoods, with citywide safety perceptions improving by 12 percentage points compared to prior survey rounds.
Shooting Comes Amid a Sharp Citywide Drop in Violence
The homicide arrives even as New Orleans has seen a significant decline in violent crime. A mid-year report released by the City of New Orleans in July 2026 found that homicides dropped 22% and nonfatal shootings fell 19% during the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2025, a trend city officials attributed to multi-agency law enforcement coordination. Data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission published this month showed 37 fatal shootings and 92 nonfatal shootings citywide so far in 2026.
The greenway has also been the site of major public gatherings in recent months, including a large nonviolent protest and rally covered in Hoodline’s coverage of the March No Kings rally, and a fatal traffic collision involving a bicyclist crossing North Claiborne Avenue that Hoodline reported on in April. City leaders have also continued to invest in the corridor, with a planned half-mile expansion connecting the bike and pedestrian path to Canal Street in Mid-City, as reported by Axios New Orleans in October 2024.
What Happens Next
If NOPD identifies and arrests a suspect, Louisiana law could bring severe consequences depending on the circumstances of the killing. Under Louisiana Revised Statute 14:30.1, second-degree murder covers both intentional killings and homicides committed during certain felonies, such as armed robbery, and carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
For now, the key questions remain unanswered. Police have not said whether the greenway’s cameras or call boxes captured any activity related to the shooting, and no motive or suspect description has been released.
